Spider on web

This one was a project for my sketchbook class. The idea was to make art out of non-art materials (as if non-art materials exist!). I used black foam that is relatively soft. It came from boxes that computers were packed in. This was carved and hot glued together to make the spider. I then went outside and found a stick with a "Y" shape of the correct dimensions to build the web on. After some research on how spiders build their webs, I tied the rope and attached the spider.

Minotaur

This character could be the start of a larger scene with Theseus and a labyrinth setting. I made it entirely from pipecleaners, with a cloth loincloth. The horns came out awesome, the face looks too cartoony and nice and the legs and feet are not in correct proportion.

Alien with Flying Saucer UFO

This is a character that has evolved through the creation process. It started out as one face from a wall of faces like in FFIX Oeilvert. I liked the face so much that I built a little grey alien body for him. I then tried to make a paper mache robot, but it would not stand and took up way too much space. That got crumpled and thrown away in favor of a simpler UFO vehicle. I saved the driver's seat and constructed the flying saucer much larger than originally planned. The lights around the edge are made from scraps of red-themed neckties wrapped around empty tape rolls. I did paper mache and painted it in my drybrushing combination of acrylic and tempera paint. The silver highlights are enamel model paint.
